Tagging folksonomy allows Flickr users to tags photos with terms that others like themselves would use. It works well. Flickr has other tools too - organizers, maps(!), privacy settings. Photos can be posted by various methods, including sending them by cell phone. Really wild.
I think the Salon article summed it up with these thoughts: "All this cross-pollination of ideas and images has emergent off-line social implications as well...The result is nothing less dramatic than subtle changes in the way friends, family members and even strangers participate in each other's lives."
